Not your WhatsApp number from Manila. Not your sister's number in Mississauga. A real Canadian mobile line in your name, that goes on your CNO registration, that hospital HR can text when your shift moves, that the Ontario health card office can use to confirm your appointment. Why the number has to be sorted before you fly
Canadian healthcare onboarding runs on SMS. Hospital HR sends shift bids and the onboarding checklist to a Canadian number. Telemedicine portals need one for two-factor login. RBC, TD, BMO and Scotiabank text a code when you open the newcomer account holding your first paycheque. Landlords run credit checks against a Canadian callback line. The CNO sends fee reminders by SMS.
Land at Pearson at 11pm on a Sunday and try to buy a SIM the next morning, and you have already lost days. Most onboarding steps queue behind a +1 number, and most have deadlines. A nurse starting a Monday 7am shift cannot afford a Tuesday carrier-store appointment.

Picking up at the airport

A nurse's first 48 hours in Toronto
She booked from Cebu two weeks before departure. The SIM arrived in her mailbox four days later. She put it in her phone but did not activate; activation triggers on landing.
Wheels touch down at Pearson at 9:40pm. Customs by 10:25. Phone on in the arrivals hall, signal locks in, and she has a Canadian +1 number before she clears the doors.
